We set out our aim to paddle around Ireland, allowing
ourselves a month away from family and business commitments to complete it. Weather
permitting, we would challenge the record time in a standard sea kayak. We
wanted to raise substantial funds for the RNLI in the process.<o:p></o:p></div>

This ethos of real risk management forms the backbone of our
Adventure Sports Centre on the Isle of Man.<o:p></o:p></div>

We have forged links with the RNLI on the national water
safety forum through Coasteering and the establishment of the National
Coasteering Charter, as well as regular local fund raising efforts. We hold the RNLI’s strategy of incident
prevention being the long-term solution in high regard, and have adopted this
approach in adventure sports on the Isle of Man. This parallel includes regular
training, experience and can do attitude to manage incidents.</div>

It is incidents that require external assistance which
attract media focus, and where the vital lifeboats and their dedicated crews
come into play. This is where funds are especially required.<o:p></o:p></div>

Our aim to paddle to and around Ireland, was part of our
overall strategy to blend these factors and promote positive risk management,
be good ambassadors of the RNLI and inspire others to reach their potential.<o:p></o:p></div>

As we journeyed along both the East and South coastline of
Ireland, making real decisions which involved real risk, we both realised that
the sea kayaking trip we had committed to, given the relentless winds we had
encountered during this time, allowed for limited options. The impact on our
bodies was relentless; recovery time minimal.
The expedition in this format was unlikely to achieve our aim, with the
current weather and related sea conditions (May has been one of the coldest and
windiest on record), and our associated physical state.<o:p></o:p></div>

In short, responsible risk management for us was to take a
break from paddling. <o:p></o:p></div>

forward is to increase our options. We aim to increase support and continue to
raise funds for the RNLI, carrying its message of real risk management on our
journey. We kayaked along the East and South coastline over 2 weeks; we aim to
explore more of the the West and North coastline over the forthcoming years…<o:p></o:p></b></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">We're raising funds for the RNLI as we paddle round Ireland and are having amazing support from the crews round the country. The RNLI was founded by Sir William Hillary who came to live on the Isle of Man in 1808, <span style="background-color: white; color: #252525; line-height: 22px; text-align: start;">Being aware of the treacherous nature of the </span><span style="background-color: white; text-align: start;"><span style="color: #252525;"><span style="line-height: 22px;"> Irish Sea with many ships being wrecked around the manx</span></span></span><span style="background-color: white; color: #252525; line-height: 22px; text-align: start;"> coast, he drew up plans for a national lifeboat service manned by trained crews.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #252525; line-height: 22px; text-align: left;">At the age of 60, Sir William took part in the rescue, in 1830, of the packet </span><i style="color: #252525; line-height: 22px; text-align: left;">St George</i><span style="background-color: white; color: #252525; line-height: 22px; text-align: left;">, which had foundered on </span>Conister Rock<span style="background-color: white; color: #252525; line-height: 22px; text-align: left;"> at the entrance to Douglas Harbour on the island. </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #252525; line-height: 22px; text-align: left;"> </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #252525; line-height: 22px; text-align: left;">He commanded the lifeboat and was washed overboard with others of the lifeboat crew, yet finally everyone aboard the </span><i style="color: #252525; line-height: 22px; text-align: left;">St George</i><span style="background-color: white; text-align: left;"><span style="color: #252525;"><span style="line-height: 22px;"> was rescued with no loss of life. It was this incident which prompted Sir William to set up a scheme to build The Tower of Refuge on</span></span></span><span style="background-color: white; color: #252525; line-height: 22px; text-align: left;"> Conister Rock – a project completed in 1832 which stands to this day at the entrance to Douglas Harbour.</span></span></div>

We were asked "is it for some kind of therapy you're doing it?"</div>

Over the last couple of days we too have been asking ourselves the same question, it's been tough going! Staring at the next focal point move slowly closer, estimating time and distances, checking and re-checking maps, pushing wind and tide... Why do we do it?</div>

Because it's there. Because we relish a challenge. Because we too need to move out of our comfort zone, need to take risk (try something which the end result is not certain). Having moved out of the real low point on this kayak trip, some reasoning...</div>

We both have families at home on the Isle of Man, work commitments also... And sometimes it's taking up real challenges that allows us to see things more clearly, from a different perspective. <br />
Journeying by kayak gives a unique perspective on life. Its real! Raw nature can be a relentless unforgiving educator....It makes the paddler feel alive. Even when kayaking the strenuous mileage that Keirron & George are covering on a day to day basis their heart rate rarely goes high enough to cause a state that is highly dependant on carbohydrates. Predominantly their energy is coming from fat because of the relative low intensity work over a near continuous expedition pace. Thus it is important to have fat ingested throughout the day while they are paddling. Hence, nuts, cheese & meats take up the predominance of their daily food intake.They finish the day with a single large carbohydrate intake so that this is digested and transported to necessary muscles and organs by the time they wake. This energy system is then only utilised in situations where more effort is required, such as surf landings/ launches, tidal races or points of high wind. On days where they will be battling the wind and surf all day they will also be continually eating small quantities of carbohydrates to maintain their energy levels.</span></div>

The guys have covered 20 miles or so today, seems another tough day battling across a few bays and Keirron has said their bodies are feeling it, but they have also had some good luck meeting folk...</div>

It seems that it was a bit shorter day than what they were hoping for with a message from Keirron saying they have had a relentless headwind. They have paddled at least 12 nautical miles today, possibly more, they have left County Down behind, not sure if they crossed or went into the entrance to Carlingford lough (guessing that might have been a bit of a battle...) but are now in County Louth.</div>

The last few weeks have been a waiting game for the pair, watching for a suitable weather window to begin their expedition. After the strong winds of the last few days, Wednesday looked like the day! Meeting early this morning at Fenella beach they packed their brand new S<a href="http://www.seakayakinguk.com/">ea Kayaking UK</a> kayaks, Keirron in an Explorer and George, and Explorer HV, both well renowned expedition boats, and at just before 7.20am they set out on the crossing from Peel to Northern Ireland.</div>

During the planning stage of the Aleutians 2012 Expedition, Keirron and George set out and discussed their personal goals and expectations, the main challenges they envisaged meeting and how the journey could be completed successfully. These discussions then became the themes of the trip itself. Safety was a hot topic and arguable the overall theme, the direction we would approach each interlocking segment from...<br />

As intrinsic and extrinsic motivation can be largely guided by goals, and this expedition would likely require the full extent of physical and mental endurance from its athletes, setting an achievable overall goal which reflects the hard nature of the environment, the dynamic nature of expedition paddling, and<br />
a sense of accomplishment through sound judgement was key to our personal safety.<br />

In short the 'right' agreed goal would motivate, challenge and keep real risk to an acceptable level.<br />

Having set this as our blueprint, it also communicated a clear message to our sponsors, supporters and fellow paddlers. The expedition was to explore the Aleutians by sea kayak, up to but not beyond our limits. We had discussed a policy of not requiring emergency assistance, as this would certainly show a lack of judgement and as 'expedition leader', I would deem myself to have failed in my role. This is the same approach we take at Adventurous Experiences. Providing individuals take some responsibility for their own actions, a serious medical condition is possible the only thing we could not anticipate or prevent.<br />
<br />
Given the remote location, any immediate issues would have to resolved by ourselves anyway, and the 'snowball stopped and reversed', as emergency aid would take some time to arrive. We prefer to rely on the 'prevention is better than cure' approach. This included;<br />
<br />
<br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>Gathering and tracking down every available bit of information and advice from previous expeditions and related experience in the Bering Sea, particularly the Aleutian Islands. </li>
<li>Reading as many accounts and perspectives of major expeditions as possible, particularly in the colder regions, noting leadership decisions which has effected and impacted upon the expedition. </li>
<li>Ensuring the planner included mental preparation and physical fitness training.</li>
<li>Refresh navigation skills and complete the RYA Day Skipper Theory course (through the winter) for external input and to understand the movements of any vessels we might encounter.</li>
<li>Swimming regularly in the indoor pool, and when practical in the sea (in wetsuits).</li>

It was 10pm when we saw the first glimmer of a ships mast light blinking through the foggy haze on the horizon...<br />
<br />
Completing our final, well rehearsed yet conscious systematic preparations, packing away our thermal jackets, zipping up our Kokatat Expedition drysuits and donning headlamps, buoyancy aids and Snapdragon spray decks. Position the SKUK Explorer sea kayaks just above the surf zone on the boulder beach as the light grew dimmer, observing the timing of the sets steadily pounding the beach.<br />
<br />
Rest the Lendal paddles in the cockpit, check the Suunto deck compass is fixed securely with the spare split paddles just in front. The barometer, fastened to my buoyancy aid just above and to the right of the front zip pocket, had been stable at 1017 for the last three hours.<br />
<br />
Keeping as clear a deck as possible at all times. Finally clip and adjust our towlines, (previously checking and re-stowed), run through our approach and action plan (again), re-affirming the final sequence... I glance at the pattern of stickers, symbols of our sponsors and support, the vibrant orange and white logo of 'Hopes and Dream's...<br />
<br />
At 10:40pm (Alaska time) on Tuesday 29th May 2012 with the anticipated lull in the large swell sets coming in nicely, we both pushed our kayaks into the Bering sea, wading swiftly through the foamy shallows, slippery and uneven underfoot, sat in the cockpit feet either side and delivered the vigorous strokes to take us beyond the beach breakers. George was about a second and half ahead of me and avoided the breaker I took over my open deck.<br />
<br />
Outside the immediate danger zone, legs now inside, full contact restored feeling the anticipation and excitement which had been building through the day coursing through my body. We rafted up and I pumped out, a little chilly and we headed for the white light now about a mile away. Side by side in the darkness, natural strong easy paddle strokes, every contact point below deck felt alive and each change of pressure from my feet through my thighs to my buttocks accentuated as the kayaks moved gracefully in the increasing swell.<br />
<br />
Darkness had descended fully as we drew along the Port side of the Puk uk, smiling welcoming friends to meet us and help us on-board, a good balance to counter the tall dark lines of the ship, rising falling above us, the ladder touching the sea then rolling high out of reach.<br />
The sequence for boarding worked almost exactly to plan, and soon we were shaking hands, hugging Billy, Colette and Jake, and lashing the kayaks to the dinghy.<br />

And then we were continuing our journey, a new aspect to the trip, another stage in the ongoing adventure, the team a mixture of emotions, but very much a strong team, with added perspectives and experiences to discuss, reflect upon and share with others...<br />
